Pre-Surgical Optimisation.
The Right Foundation Before Implant Surgery.

Good implant treatment begins long before the implant is placed.
Because Dr Ferhan Ahmed is qualified in both medicine and dentistry,
that preparation goes further than most practices can — assessing and
optimising your general health, not only your mouth, so surgery has the
best possible conditions to heal.

Preparation is where the difference is made.

A dental implant depends on far more than the surgery itself. Healthy gums, enough good-quality bone, a balanced bite and, just as importantly, a body in the right condition to heal. Most implant preparation covers the first three. At FAME, it covers all four.

That's possible because Dr Ferhan Ahmed is medically as well as dentally qualified. Before any surgery, he assesses the whole patient, including the general-health factors that quietly affect how well an implant heals and lasts, and puts a plan in place to address anything that could get in the way of a successful outcome. Where it's useful, that includes screening blood tests carried out in-house. It is preparation very few dental practices are able to offer.

Oral Health Assessment before dental surgery, Dental Implant Preparation, FAME Dentistry, Glasgow

Every detail settled before treatment begins.

Our structured workflow ensures every stage of implant preparation is completed before surgery, creating greater confidence and more predictable outcomes.

01.

Consultation & clinical assessment

We start with your concerns, your goals, and a full medical and dental history, because at FAME, both matter. A thorough examination establishes the condition of your teeth, gums, bone and bite.

02.

Digital diagnostics & planning

CBCT imaging, intraoral scans, photographs and bite analysis build a complete picture, and your implant is planned digitally before anything is done, positioned around function, aesthetics and the teeth around it.

03.

Medical optimisation

Because Dr Ferhan is medically qualified, your general health is reviewed as part of preparation rather than left to chance. Where it's helpful, screening blood tests are carried out in-house, and factors that affect healing, such as blood-sugar control, are assessed and, where possible, optimised before surgery.

04.

Biological (dental) optimisation

Where the mouth itself needs preparing first, that's done now: treating gum disease, removing teeth that can't be saved, preserving the bone at the socket, or building bone volume where more is needed.

05.

Implant readiness

Once Dr Ferhan is satisfied that everything is in optimal condition and the best possible foundation for a successful surgery is in place, your implant plan is finalised and each stage of the restoration is coordinated.

The preparation your case may need.

Everyone is different. After your assessment, we recommend only what's genuinely needed to get you ready and nothing more.

01.

Medical Screening & Optimisation

In-house screening and, where relevant, blood tests to check the general-health factors that affect healing, with a plan to optimise them before surgery. Made possible by Dr Ferhan's dual medical and dental qualification.

Best for: patients with diabetes, on blood-thinning medication, with significant medical histories, or a previous implant that failed.

02.

Periodontal Therapy

Healthy gums are part of the support every implant needs. Where gum disease or inflammation is present, it is treated to restore healthier tissue before placement.

Best for: bleeding gums, gum disease, or ongoing inflammation.

03.

Bone Assessment & Augmentation

Bone quality and volume are assessed with 3D imaging. Where more support is needed, procedures such as ridge preservation or bone grafting can improve stability and the long-term outlook.

Best for: reduced bone volume, or teeth that have been missing for some time.

04.

Tooth Extraction & Ridge Preservation

Where a tooth can't be saved, it is removed as gently as possible, and, where appropriate, the bone around the socket is preserved at the same time to protect the site for a future implant.

Best for: patients who need a tooth removed before implant treatment.

Where preparation matters most.

Pre-surgical optimisation helps any implant patient. It matters most for people whose cases carry more risk and for those who have been told elsewhere that implants aren't possible.

Type 2 diabetes: assessing and helping optimise blood-sugar control (HbA1c) before and after placement supports better healing.
Blood-thinning medication: managed safely with the right protocol, not a reason to rule implants out when properly assessed.
Previous implant failure: often traceable to an underlying condition that was never investigated the first time.
Full-arch cases: where there is little margin for error and preparation counts for everything.
Significant medical histories: people who have avoided treatment because no one has given them a clear, confident clinical plan.

What patients ask before implant treatment.

Why would a dentist run blood tests?
Because Dr Ferhan is medically as well as dentally qualified, and implant surgery is a surgical procedure carried out on a whole person. Screening blood tests can flag general-health factors, such as blood-sugar control, that affect how well an implant heals. Checking and, where possible, improving these first gives surgery the best chance, and it's something we can do in-house.
Why is preparation so important before dental implants?
Because how well an implant heals and lasts depends on far more than the surgery. Gums, bone, bite and general health all play a part. Preparing each of them first reduces avoidable risks and gives the implant the best conditions to settle.
Will everyone need extra treatment before implants?
No. Some patients are ready for placement after their assessment; others benefit from preparatory care such as gum treatment, extraction, bone work, or medical optimisation. Your pathway is decided entirely by your own needs.
How do you know whether I have enough bone?

We assess bone quality and volume with 3D imaging and a clinical examination. Where there's enough healthy bone, treatment can proceed; where more support is needed, we'll talk through the options before anything is scheduled.
I've been told I'm not suitable for implants. Is that final?
Not always. People are sometimes turned away because an underlying health factor wasn't investigated, or because a case looked too difficult without the right preparation. A full medical and dental assessment is the honest way to find out what's genuinely possible.
How long does preparation take?
It depends on what your case needs. Some patients move to placement fairly quickly; others benefit from staged treatment over several weeks or months to get everything in the right condition first.
Will I have a full plan before deciding?
Yes. Once your assessment is complete, Dr Ferhan Ahmed sets out a plan covering any preparatory treatment, your implant options, the stages involved, timescales and itemised fees, so you can decide with all of the facts to hand.
