“It is the difference between treating a symptom and solving its cause.”
Overview
Dr Tariq Bashir is a restorative dentist whose reputation has been built quietly, over two decades, largely by word of mouth among other dentists. He is the clinician many of his peers turn to when it is their own patients, their own families, or they themselves, in the chair. That kind of trust is earned through the work itself, and through years of teaching and shared learning, rather than any talent for self-promotion. For Dr Tariq, dentistry has always been about doing the work properly and doing it a little better each year.
Training & Philosophy
He graduated from the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2005, where he was named BDA Student of the Year in a UK-and-Ireland-wide field, and has pursued excellence relentlessly ever since, travelling internationally for the best teaching he could find. That pursuit led him to Seattle and the Kois Center, one of the world's most respected institutions in evidence-based dentistry, where he became the first, and still the only, dentist in Scotland to complete the full curriculum.
For a patient, the significance of that is simple. A great deal of dentistry that fails, or has to be redone, fails for the same reason: the diagnosis was rushed, or a single tooth was treated in isolation without regard for how the whole bite works together. The Kois training is built precisely on getting those foundations right, careful diagnosis, and treatment planned around the whole mouth, grounded in current science rather than habit.
Clinical Focus & Approach
- Minimally Invasive & Biomimetic Dentistry: An instinct to preserve rather than replace, reflected in his Master's in endodontics and his focus on saving natural teeth.
- Kois Center-Trained Diagnosis: The first, and still the only, dentist in Scotland to complete the full Kois Center curriculum in Seattle.
- Clinical Education & Mentorship: Co-founder of the Scottish Dental Study Club, President of the Glasgow Odontological Society, and a member of the academies that set the standard for restorative and cosmetic dentistry in the UK.
- Teaching & Public Outreach: Lectures on composite bonding and modern restorative techniques, has taught the next generation of dentists, and has shared dental advice with the public on BBC Radio Scotland.
The Impact of Care
What patients notice first, though, is not the credentials but the calm. Dr Tariq is unhurried and gentle, and he gives the same standard of care to everyone who sits down with him; the outcome matters just as much whoever it's for. That belief runs through his work beyond the surgery too: he is one of the founders of a dental-aid charity providing care to people who would otherwise go without.
He joins FAME as Clinical Lead, a step taken to do even better work, with the team, technology and space to match his standards. Excellence, in his hands, is for anyone who wants it.
